The Social Culture-Issue #9

Our love of social media is something that will always run deep through made4media’s veins. In fact this year Bec & Amanda are heading over to New York City for the Social Media Week’s 10th anniversary conference. It is so important in the digital world to keep on top of everything that is happening, that is why we are lucky that Amanda, our self ordained Social Media Queen, lives and breathes social media on a daily basis reading all the latest news & trends before she goes to sleep at night and when she wakes!

WE ARE BACK! This year we will see a lot of changes within the social media and digital world. As virtual reality becomes staple in marketing we look at what the next big thing is going to be. Will it be chat bots taking over our news source stream or will it be social influencer marketing taking the world by storm and becoming the revolution of advertising? Who knows, but what we do know is that we will be here every step of the way to tell you all about it and we will be making sure we are immersing ourselves deep into every aspect!

Zuckerberg’s Family Friendly New Year’s Resolution Mark Zuckerberg has made a huge announcement…It’s a new year and straight up Facebook has changed… they set their goals and have literally made sure they’re following their resolutions! If I was a small business or just a business in general I would be worried. If I was a news source that benefited from social media I would be even more worried as Facebook has decided to change their algorithm to give users a more family friendly news feed. Which, to be honest, is why we all joined the social media platform in the first place. Stay tuned for more updates on this announcement as they roll out. In the mean time you can read more about what Mr Zuckerberg said here

Put This On Your To Do List!LinkedIn, one of those social platforms you just put to the side…am I right? Well don’t. The latest stats for LinkedIn are very promising, not just from a personal professional point of view, but also for a business point of view. If you haven’t got your business on LinkedIn, please put this as a priority on your To Do list. It has come a long way since being launched in 2003 with 1 million users to being acquired by Microsoft in 2016 and now sitting at over 500 million users. It is such a great platform for professional networking and business profiling. Have a read here of the stats LinkedIn has after the latest 14 years of being around, it is pretty impressive!

Instagram has your back…What’s a holiday without an update? Instagram has been working hard behind the scenes creating some fun updates for us to use in a personal and business sense. One that is super clever is rolling out a recommended for you feature which recommends certain accounts that Instagram thinks you would like. This is a great addition as you are then able to see things and follow things you wouldn’t have ordinarily known about! Thanks for looking out for us Instagram! Read more about these updates and how to use them here.

Snapchat how dare you! For the LOVE of InstagramHow easy it is to annoy users with change! Snapchat has just felt the wrath of social media users who have pushed back against their latest update. To be honest, it is pretty rubbish. However in saying that, it takes a little bit of time to get used to changes in anything. The backlash they’re seeing from their top rating influencers is huge. Instagram must be jumping for joy as we have seen some of the top rating snapchat influencers tell their followers they won’t be using Snapchat anymore and to head over to their Instagram to watch their ‘mystories’ over there! The best way to combat the change is to learn how to use it again, we consulted the attached guide to update us on what we need to know and how to overcome the change that has occurred!

The Social Culture-Issue #8

The GIF below says it all! Talking about transparency in the digital realm was somewhat of a common theme this year across all social and digital platforms. All of the conferences, articles & discussions throughout 2017 had this as an occurring issue. We love the way we can use social media to benefit our clients. They are platforms that are fun, interactive and easily accessible for almost all consumers.

But there has always been a few issues around how it is working ethically with the data it is producing and also the content it is allowing to overshadow the more traditional forms that are slowly falling to the wayside.  Just recently the Australian Federal Government directed the ACCC to commence an enquiry into digital platforms – especially Facebook and Google.

ACCC On The Witch Hunt! With advertising expenditure in print newspapers declining over recent years, the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission will step in to see how these digital platforms effect media and advertising service markets. This couldn’t have come at a better time. Although we love using these platforms and creating the amazing content to capture the eyeballs of your clients we also want to make sure that what we are putting in front of them is being regulated properly by these social media heavy weights. We hope that this enquiry allows the transparency of this information for all eyes to see! To read more into this click here…

Blink & You Will Miss It! As we reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly for 2017 in the world of social media, we came across this great article highlighting some of the biggest platform changes that shook social media in 2017! To find out some of the developments we’ve had in social media and what we could possibly expect in 2018 click here!

Best GIFs of 2017 It’s impossible to deny that GIFs have become an essential part of the Internet! We have been reporting on them all year and encourage everyone to use them in the marketing strategies as an extra form of media to catch eyeballs! This year the main database for gifs, GIPHY, added a much needed view counter which allowed users to see just how viral a GIF went.  A crowd favourite in the m4m office – we can’t go past number 25! Click here to see the full suite!

And that’s a Spotify WRAP! We have cut some sick beats in the m4m office this year! And we all know how easy it is to discover some great music on Spotify, but it can be equally easy to forget some of your favourite tunes you may have listened to throughout the year. Thankfully Spotify won’t let that happen with their Wrapped feature which takes you through your year in music naming some of your favourite artists and songs. A great marketing gimmick as well as curation of your fav songs from the year! Check out our office DJ, AG’s Spotify Wrap above (Don’t judge like we did!Click here to find out your Spotify stats!

For the LOVE of Instagram This year it’s been clear that Instagram has been ramping up its battle with Snapchat. As one of our favourite social platforms in the m4m office, we’ve seen several updates on the app that helped us with advertising, company growth and income for our clients. Click here for the round up of the latest Instagram updates that you should definitely be in the know about by now!

The Social Culture-Issue #7

You can’t deny the power of social media. In the last two weeks we have seen the Marriage Equality fight come to your via social media real time. How did you find out about the way Australia voted? In the made4media office we watched it live via Channel 9 on Facebook, and so did 338, 000 other people. That was only Channel 9’s Facebook live coverage numbers, this doesn’t include the rest of the networks and their live coverage.

Where Is The Social At? Lets talk about the Queensland Election campaign. Within the first 8 hours of the Election announcement there were 1700 tweets relating back to the hashtag #qldvotes- it now has over 10k and counting! But PLEASE EXPLAIN this..Where are all of the social media adverts for our political leaders? It’s getting complicated for our pollies now as they go into elections. They have more to think about when it comes to their strategies. Where are they going to be able to capture most of their audience? SOCIAL MEDIA…yet we at made4media can’t see any epic social media adverts created or anything ground breaking to get people on their side. Only funny gifs and meme’s we have seen are made by other.Don’t play the boring game like the pollies and doing and get left behind. Stand out from the crowd and your competitors and create a social campaign that will capture your audience with the made4media team. Chat to us today!

Heck Yes To The GIF!  Who doesn’t love a GIF? They aren’t the new kids on the block but heck they are currently everywhere when you open your social media platforms of emails that are flowing into your inbox! If you didn’t already know (we didn’t) Gif is an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format which was introduced back in 1987. The Internet quickly embraced the Gif and 30 years later even marketers have found benefits of using them in their strategies. You can easily search or create gif’s using a database called Giphy and share them to your audience. Click here to read more about how you can use them in your marketing and social strategies.

Getting Shady With Snapchat Almost a year ago Snapchat announced Spectacles, their high-tech sunglasses that can record videos.  Burger King and Sainsbury’s are the first to create a Snapchat ad using these nifty glasses. The short videos were shot on a 115-degree circular format from a first-person point of view and enabled Snapchat users to rotate their phones to see different views of the ad. The ads were recently released on Snapchat with Burger King’s ad launch coinciding with National Cheeseburger Day. Clever and weird all in one, read more here

Great Scott! We’re Already In The Future!
Even though we saw Marty McFly deal with holograms back in the 1985 release of Back To The Future, did we ever think it was just around the corner? Gen Z are going to be making something BIG in the very near future. They were born into the world of digital and are growing up under the influence of our social media marketing. The new generation, Gen Z, has shown a keen interest in storytelling and narratives, specifically through social media. With the current exploration in holographic content for social media marketing it is only a matter of time before we see this aspect jumping out of our screens. Click here to find out more about interactive holograms and what it might mean for social media marketing!

Because 24 Hours Wasn’t Enough
It is becoming more and more like Snapchat however no one is complaining. Instagram’s latest updates with regards to their Instagram Stories is nothing to be cranky about. In fact they’re giving us more and more opportunities to use this social tool to the best of our marketing ability and we will take everything they’ve got! Now with the ability to upload photos older than 24 hours old we can start using their instant video capacity to our advantage from a marketing perspective. Read more about the update here and start using this for your business today.

The Social Culture-Issue #6

How social media is used in the world always continues to amaze. Watching the unfolding of Lisa Wilkinson’s resignation from Channel 9 via twitter on Monday night confirmed that social media is the way of the future. No longer do we need to wait for a television statement or a newspaper article, it is now tweeted, updated on Facebook or posted on Instagram in real time. Which means that in a matter of minutes we knew that Channel 9 had lost a morning show co-host and Channel 10 had a gained an evening show anchor.

Controversial? Yes, and we got to watch it all in real time!  Another message within Lisa’s resignation saw a couple of long standing hashtags used  #equalpay  and  #genderequality which created conversation within the social media world and saw some strong messages re-presented on the world stage. This week ‘Girls Run The World’ and we say a big thank you to social media for giving everyone and every cause a platform!

Go On A Break Without Breaking Up!

We’ve all got that one friend who constantly shares way too much information about their life. Or that business that continuously shows up on your Facebook feed. Apparently Facebook has a solution to your frustration! At the moment they are testing a ‘snooze’ feature allowing you to temporarily unfollow a person or a page. That’s right you don’t need to feel guilty anymore by permanently unfollowing that annoying person and never seeing what they’re sharing on Facebook ever again! You can choose to unfollow them for 24 hours, a week or even a month. For more information on what this ‘snooze’ button may mean for you or your business click here

Hashtag For A Purpose

Hashtags are such a massive part of the online world. It is unlikely you’ll find someone who doesn’t use one in their social media posts on any platform. In fact due to its worldwide use it was added to the Oxford dictionary in 2010 and the Scrabble dictionary in 2014! Even though most people seem to know what they are, many people don’t understand how to use them effectively. Click here to find out six simple ways you can use hashtags in your social media strategy!

The Hot Topics On The Digital Circuit

Digital trends are something we must always stay on top of in our fast paced world.  With so much change in the world making sure you are reading about what is happening will keep you on top of knowing the lingo! At the moment there is a huge spotlight on digital transparency and measurability with the big two – Google & Facebook. Companies are wanting the reassurance that when they are spending money to have an advert on Google or Facebook, Google & Facebook can then ensure that the advert is 100% in view of the audience they are targeting. At the moment, these companies won’t confirm or deny or hand over the proof to measure this.  This is a hot topic which is something to keep your eyes on! To read more about the top 5 digital trends doing the rounds at conferences this year click here.

Instagram Has New Shiny Things

Been smacked in the face with a few POLLS on Instagram Stories in the last week? Don’t worry, we were too! Instagram is making things a little more interactive by allowing users to add a poll sticker to their stories. Adding polls is similar to adding any other sticker on Instagram where you can ask your audience anything from what outfit you should wear to what food you should make for dinner. People viewing your stories can tap on a choice to vote and Instagram will then show you the overall results from your friends. The Blue Tick of Approval
You’ve probably seen that little blue tick next to your favourite (or not so favourite *Donald Trump*) celebrity or influencers Instagram page. This is a verification badge and means that the account is an authentic representation of the person behind it. It’s not difficult for celebs to gain the little blue tick next to their name however for small businesses it’s a different story. Click here for a few tips on how your business can achieve the blue tick.

Pixels like you’ve never seen them!
Usually pixels mean a criminals face washed out on your local news channel, however if you’re using Facebook advertisements or plan to use them in the future there’s one key tool that you should use to get the most out of your advertising campaign; Facebook Pixel. A Facebook Pixel is a code you place on your website that helps you track conversions from your Facebook ads. When someone visits your website and makes a purchase, the Facebook pixel is triggered and reports this action in your Facebook Insights section. You will then know when a customer takes action and can reach that customer again through future Facebook ads. It sounds wishy washy, however it isn’t as hard as it sounds! To read this fast, easy guide to Facebook Pixels and how to install them click here

Twitter just put on weight!
The tweets in your timeline are about to double in size! Twitter has just recently announced that its character limit will jump from 140 to 280, giving users the ability to express their opinions or simply give a longer life update to their followers. To find out more on how this new Twitter update will change your timeline click here!

From a tech flaw, brilliance is created!
We love a bit of creativity in the world and when it is mixed with social media we love it even more! An Irish Indie rock band, The Academic, recorded a music video for their single ‘Bear Claws’ using a never seen before loop pedal; Facebook live. As you may or may not know Facebook live isn’t exactly streamed live with videos being delayed a few seconds. The Academic decided to use this to their advantage and looped their own voices into the track. Check out their amazingly creative video here!

A disaster helped us understand Snapchat’s map!

Is Snapchat becoming the latest news channel? One of Snapchat’s latest feature allows you to share your location with your friends and view their location on your map…kinda creepy we know! You can also add your snaps to be posted on the map for the public to see based on the location they were posted. This new feature not only allows you to spy on your friends but allows you to tune into real world events that are going on. Click hereto discover how Snapchat’s Map feature allowed many users around the world a real-time glimpse at the flooding in Houston, USA.

But first.. let me take a selfie

All of last week the Internet was buzzing over Apple’s debut of the iPhone 8, with the biggest news being that an iPhone X would be released. With edge to edge display, no home button, wireless charging and an almost terrifying facial recognition technology this iPhone is definitely one that we aren’t used to. This iPhone also puts selfie taking onto another level, with a portrait mode available for the front facing camera and a lighting feature that allows users to choose different modes of lighting. With the most famous selfie (above) taken on a Samsung it will be interesting to see if this new iPhone will become the next big thing! Oh but did we mention that it costs a whopping $1579 in Australia!! However the price tag didn’t stop selfie lovers from containing their excitement all over the Internet in anticipation for its release in November. Click here to see how the iPhone X is perfectly designed for a generation of selfie takers.

Look What You Made Her Do!

Whether you love her or hate her you have to admit Taylor Swift sure knows how to get the Internet talking about her. On August 18th, pop star Taylor Swift suddenly vanished online deleting ALL posts over her social media accounts. This sparked an online frenzy from fans on the Internet and social media to discover answers behind the pop star’s social media black out. Over a few days Swift teased her return with clips of creepy snakes striking at the screen, leaving the Internet buzzing with theories on what this could all mean. This article on Social Media Today takes you through how to stage your own reinvention, whether it be personal or business…

So T R E N D Y right now!

You’re Not Insane, Facebook Had A Facelift!

Surprise! No you aren’t going insane! Within the last 12 hours Facebook changed it up, and to be honest it isn’t a HUGE change, yet from a design perspective it looks different and you will feel a little bit weird when you look at it for the first time because the usual 3 hours a day spent on the social media platform now has to adjust to something new. It actually makes the screen you are using the platform on seem wider in appearance so definitely NOT a negative in any sense.  If you haven’t seen the changes, head into your apps section on your phone and update your Facebook App or sign in on your desktop to check it out. We can’t wait to explore what else is behind the update! Click here for the list of changes!

The Social Culture-Issue #2

Everyone is different. We all like different things. However when it comes to the content we read and take in everyday, the way we like to enjoy these things is usually related back to our generational age. We like to think our made4media office is ageless as we don’t generally refer to anyones age because to us, it doesn’t matter. However, when it comes to the way we strategically put together our social and digital strategies there is a big difference in how we target each demographic.

The Generation Segregation…

A quick snapshot into our generational breakdown usually includes the below…

Baby Boomers (1946-1964) who use Facebook, read high quality content around reviews, blog articles. They enjoy slow paced videos that contain visual instructions, they love reading emails and they are avid users of coupons!

Gen-Xer’s (1965-1980) can be targeted on Facebook more so than the Baby Boomers’s as there are more of them using the platform. They can also be targeted via digital video, either online or downloadable, email marketing as they are the most likely generation to check their email, blog content that educates and Twitter as they appreciate real time news.

Millennials (1981-1999) are pretty straight forward – they’re on all social media not just focused on Facebook & you can see them regularly on Instagram stories & Snapchat.  Mobile & SMS marketing is a big tool used as they are never without a mobile phone in their hand. Video marketing, which also includes their habits on Snapchat & user generated content such as blogs, chats, tweets, audio – anything that is a good way of grabbing their eyeballs!

Gen-Zer’s (2000-now) you name it, these guys use it, watch it and play it. We’re talking quizzes, social media, short videos, memes & imagery. Actually literally anything that might be associated with visual stimulation! They are calculated with their choices, however the choices they are presented with are limitless!

Through our social and digital expertise at made4media we know who we are talking to and who needs to see your brand/product as we do the research into making sure you are in front of the right target audience.

Flying Internet Drones…heck!

For those of you who didn’t already know, Facebook are not only into social media and connecting people, they’re currently trialling drones that provide internet to those who don’t have access. I am not talking about those suburbs out there in greater Brisbane who might have dodgy access or are still waiting for their NBN, I am talking about flying drones over the likes of Africa so people are able to access internet and then OBVIOUSLY sign up to a Facebook account. A quick statistic for you, only 13.5% of Africa’s population has access to internet, crazy considering 78.9% of Australians have access to the internet! This is clever, scary and brilliant all in one idea! Facebook released a statement recently saying their latest test flight was highly successful. Read more about this crazy idea here!

C H E A P  F A K E S…

Last issue we spoke about Influencers and what they do. In the m4m office we are sick of calling them capital ‘I’ Influencers. Everyone in this world is an influencer, we influence our children, family and friends. What makes these people so different to either one of us? We thought about calling them Mavens, but then not all of them are experts in their field, some of them are fakes and don’t actually have any expertise in what they talk about, just pretty picture and a passion for free things. A US marketing agency recently set up a fake Instagram account, purchased a bunch of followers for less than $400 AUD and then secured a couple of brand ambassador roles for these fake accounts…Moral of the story, if you are a brand, vet your ‘influencers’ & do your due diligence before contracting them! More on this clever fraudulent activity here..

Social Media RULES…

We like to think that social media is exactly that, social. It’s a personal account in which you can express your opinions, join particular groups and discuss things with family and friends with some great debates and never break workplace rules. WRONG. Many work places these days have social media policies of which are incorporated into employees contracts, however some don’t. If you are a company owner and don’t have this I would suggest you do. Having access to your companies Facebook page is a privilege. This means your employer puts full trust into you and how you will portray the company voice on the platform. Let’s not forget that there are 1 billion people on Facebook, imagine if someone said something bad on behalf of your company, it would take a long time to crawl out of that hole! In saying that, I do think there are times when companies take it too far and make rules that say you can’t like particular pages on Facebook or be involved in certain groups. In saying that, new rules have just been released for Australian Public Servants and there are a lot of people blowing up! (read more here) The rise of workplace rules on social media is evolving very quickly so make sure you double check what rules you have signed before you start liking that page on inappropriate Bachelor Memes!

Get Sassy with Creative Content!

We love seeing social content being created with a bit of wit and flair! The City of Sydney threw some sass Melbourne’s way last week when The City of Melbourne’s social presence on twitter spruik about being awarded the worlds most liveable city in the world. This then saw The City Of Sydney through their clever wit, bite back at Melbourne by creating a playlist on Spotify and sharing it with them.  The beauty of creative flair and quick wit can be the make or break of social content and the share-ability of campaign content. Also the use of realtime news jacking is something that, if done well, can draw the spotlight onto you and your product. Commentating on and getting your brand/business involved in real time news, the latest fads & organic topics shows that you’re up to date and in touch with the real world! When we build our social media strategies we always leave one post a week open for any raw material that may be relevant to the business we are working with. This allows organic reach & news to be involved into their weekly posts keeping them relevant to everyday topics! See more of this hilarious here!

MADE4MEDIA TO OPEN HEAD QUARTERS IN NEW YORK

Made4media is excited to announce the big move to NYC. After years of procrastinating we have decided to just do what we want and move to the concrete jungle…just kidding, we’re just showing you what fake news is! And boy have we all seen and heard some good stuff over the years. The US Election saw some crackers: Yoko Ono & Hilary Clinton having an affair back in the 70’s, Donald Trump suffering a heart attack from fake tanning fumes… (jokes, we made that one up).

Facebook has seen some of the most ridiculous fake news circle the planet thanks to the viral nature it can harbour! Fake news has been the topic of discussion since the results of the last US presidential election, which was believed to have been impacted due to fake news. Thanks to Mr Trump and his constant paranoia and accusations directed at the media, in they eye of the public, we are all getting confused on whether we are being either informed or misinformed. Wow who do you trust?
Don’t get us wrong we love Facebook and it doesn’t actively contribute to disseminating fake news, people just take advantage of the way Facebook works and use the service to spread fake news! However fear not…fake news is on the out with Facebook looking to curb the spread of fake news!
Facebook has developed a tool that is currently being trialled in 14 countries throughout the world, which will help stop the spread of fake news. This tool will be located at the top of the news feed. (as per image) Facebook won’t interfere directly, but it will try to prevent fake news from going viral by informing Facebook users how to avoid fake news by making it harder for the creator to make money of the vitality of their story.

So there we have it guys and gals, no more fake news stories going viral… well except for the brilliant old school scenario of Orson Welles’ radio broadcast on 30th of October 1939 of War of the Worlds which saw the world thinking we were being invaded by aliens… That is quite brilliant really and a part of our history!

Social media isn’t going anywhere so get your head out of the sand, sign up to our monthly newsletters and become part of The Social Culture! Your morning coffee is a strategy, if you don’t have one prior to 9am you know you are going to walk into the office not ready to work full steam ahead, the printer is going to jam and you are probably going to snap! You know why, because you didn’t have your strategic morning coffee! Everything in life has a strategy, from sport to business to life. We all have a reason for doing what we do, otherwise why are we doing it?

But first, coffee..

The same goes for your business’s social media. If we had a dollar for the amount of times we hear clients say, ‘Oh I just posted it on Facebook, not sure why, just thought it looked pretty!’ we would be living in the Bahama’s with butlers serving us Piña colada’s! (Well that is what we would choose to spend our money on!) Just because SOCIAL media has the word SOCIAL in it doesn’t mean as a business you just do it ad-hoc when you feel like it, that is what you do when you’re posting about your latest jealousy inducing food picture on your personal Facebook page!   All areas of your business have a strategy developed specifically for the areas you are concentrating on and with over 1.9 billion people on Facebook as of May 2017, the need for having a strategy on the campaigns and content you are rolling out is needed more so now than ever. Developing strategy in the made4media office is something we do across all elements of the Marketing & Digital industry and Social Strategies are something we encourage for all businesses looking to increase their social presence! That strategic morning coffee is just as important as you social media strategy! We open our arms to anyone wanting to chat social media strategy, do it properly or don’t bother – we got you!

Hide Your Kids, Hide Your Wife…

Once again we are faced with an app that dangers our kids! The app Sarahah is becoming the next level of ask.fm – only this time it is on steroids and allows itself to be web linked on other apps such as SNAPCHAT so this is less traceable for you as parents! About the app: it allows you to ask anonymous questions to the user – which in most cases are questions you don’t want to hear or answer… so thanks Sarahah for opening the bullying flood gates again. Read more about how you need to hide your kids here!
