People who use these apps will receive a warning message that all fake followers and likes will be removed. Facebook says no to low quality ads

Facebook has announced a new set of restrictions and increased penalties for brands that publish low quality ads on the platform. If you don’t already put effort into creating your ads then now is the time to! You may be thinking, what qualifies as a low quality ad? Facebook has provided three examples of the types of ads that will see your brand getting a black cross next to its name. These include; engagement ‘bait posts’ that encourage people to ‘like and share’ your ad onto their profile. Ads that withhold information in the caption and lastly, ads that are clickbait will also run the risk of being pulled down by Facebook. If you believe your business is running these ads, it’s time to rethink the types of ads you are posting so you don’t receive the penalties that the platform will soon be enforcing. Click here to find out more information about Facebook’s new restrictions!

Snapchat launches new video series

Snapchat is going up against Netflix, Stan and YouTube by streaming a series of original video content onto the platform. This month Snapchat has unveiled its first collection of Snap Originals, which include scripted drama, comedy and documentaries produced specifically for the platform. However, Snapchat has added a twist to their video series by incorporating augmented reality experiences into the shows. When prompted during a series viewers can swipe up to unlock an AR portal to a scene from the show. This is definitely an interesting step for the platform, and we are excited to see the type of content they will be releasing over the coming months! What Facebook’s new video calling device can and can’t do!

Facebook has joined the likes of Google Home and Amazon Alexa, introducing an in-home video calling device that allows you to video call your Facebook friends. There have been some privacy concerns surrounding the social media giant’s new device with many people not liking the idea of adding a microphone and camera to their kitchen. However, Facebook assures consumers that the device won’t be collecting your data to create targeted ads to your Portal screen, and they won’t be recording your calls. They’ve also made the device come with a cap for the camera lens and a button to easily turn off the microphone and camera. If you’re skeptical about Facebook’s new device then click here to read all about what it can and can’t do!

Instagram appears to be testing a new feature that allows you to add hashtags in your post outside of the main caption. This new feature will be great for businesses or users who don’t like the current spammy look of having 30 hashtags displayed in their caption. 4 Social Media Metrics you should be tracking

We understand that social media can be frustrating at times when you’re not seeing the results you’d like. You can see over 100 likes on one post and then 3 likes on another. While it can be very frustrating it’s important to not give up on your social media strategy and be consistent. It’s equally as important to track and monitor your posts to determine what content is working and what content should be ditched. Click here to find out the top 4 social media metrics you should be tracking!

Shop straight from your Instagram!

If you didn’t already know, Instagram has recently introduced a dedicated shopping channel to its explore page. The new shopping channel shows you shopping-tagged posts from businesses you follow and from ones you might like based on the posts you’ve liked and engaged with. Many Insta users may now find themselves discovering products and buying them within just a few clicks. This is a fantastic opportunity for businesses to increase their sales and followers. It’s time to add Pinterest to your social strategy!

Instagram just made getting verified a whole lot easier!

If you think your account is worthy of receiving the blue tick, then you’re in luck as Instagram has made the process a lot easier with their new verification request feature. You can make a request in the settings section of your account and only requires you to submit a photo of your ID. This feature has already been tested in Australia for a couple of months now, but Instagram has just announced that it will now be available worldwide. Instagram is also amping up it’s security in an attempt to catch misleading or fake accounts by rolling out an “about this account” feature. This new feature will be shown on Instagram accounts with large followings and will show when the account first joined Instagram, the country they’re located in, any past username changes and any ads that the account runs. Uncovering the Power of Social Media

Anyone who owns or manages a business will have heard and understood the saying ‘you have to spend money to make money.’ While this is true for many business functions, it doesn’t always ring true when it comes to marketing. Yes, you just read that correctly – a solid marketing plan doesn’t need to be expensive!

Today’s ever-changing world of accessible technology and readily available tools like social media or digital advertising platforms has caused a large industry paradigm shift towards spending less to make more. And to be honest, this is a win for all businesses, large and small.

Those involved directly in the marketing industry work tirelessly to move the needle on what often seems like a laundry list of metrics to try and distinguish what’s working. Ultimately, our aim is to increase the bottom line and we’re always hoping we’ll find that silver bullet to cut through. We look at measures like website visits, conversation rates, leads per channel and click-through rates to try and make informed decisions, but so often we see companies ignoring or misunderstanding the power of social media. We’re halfway through 2018 and it’s about time business leaders properly understand its true value.

You’d be hard-pressed to find a company who isn’t on social media in some form, but there’s just so many out there who fall by the wayside and give up all together. Why? They don’t do it well because they lack a clear strategy.  An approach to social media cannot ever be ad-hoc and reactive. You must have a proactive plan in place, offering relevant content to a targeted audience who are interested in what you have to say.

The paradigm shift has meant we’re rapidly replacing traditional marketing channels like TV and radio with a solid social media strategy which costs far less, enabling us to really engage with potential customers while also tapping in and listening to them. Platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn provide companies with the opportunity to start two-way conversations and truly discover exactly what their customers want and how to give it to them. You can see in real-time the reach, who’s reading what, how often it’s being shared and also what they’re looking for. That sounds like a silver bullet!

Becoming active on social media costs very little – while you may pay for your time for yourself or a third-party to build and implement a strategy, using the channel itself is free. All channels, whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter or another, are available and accessible 24 hours a day, so you can talk to an audience when it suits them. Not only this, but you’re offered unlimited reach and if you give the audience what they want to hear, they’ll let others know about it. Referrals are a powerful converter and if you offer useful content, readers will share it at no cost to you.

We see many companies simply publishing the occasional post or answering customer queries randomly, but the jewel is found by those who are savvier and understand the importance of building a long-term engagement strategy.

As made4media’s fearless leader Bec Pini suitably puts it:

“It’s much like planning a big event, you wouldn’t go and buy decorations, food and drinks without knowing the style and theme, the location and who you’ll invite. Using social media means you have to have a plan first, before you dive in and start making decisions.”

If you’re not on social media, using it strategically and taking advantage of what it can offer your business, then you’re missing out on a quick, inexpensive and powerful way to reach basically anyone you want to at a time that suits them.

The Social Culture-Issue #14

It’s that time of the month again where we roundup the latest and greatest social media news happening in the industry! From a creative new way to interact with your followers on Instagram stories to Augmented Reality appearing more and more on our Facebook newsfeed, we discuss it all.

Online Shopping is about to get a little easier thanks to Facebook!

Facebook is cranking up its AR game by allowing users to virtually try on products like makeup and sunglasses directly from your news feed. Once this feature hits the app, you will be able to ‘try on’ products that are advertised through a process similar to that of a Snapchat filter. Instead of just showing you products in a normal advertisement, Facebook uses your phone’s front camera and augmented reality tech to put products such as sunglasses or lipstick on your face! For more information on how your Facebook news feed could be your new fitting room, click here.

Snapchat launches its first speech recognition filter

We’ve previously talked about Snapchat’s ability to change filters according to sound but now the app has just announced that new lenses are coming that can react to speech! The new lenses can reportedly respond to words such as “hi”, “love”, “yes”, “no” and “wow”. Creative lenses like these seem to keep Snapchat users engaged and we are interested to see how advertisers might use these filters further down the track. Click here to discover how these new lenses work!

6 Best Instagram analytics tools to gain followers

With over 1 billion active users on Instagram you are seriously missing out if your business isn’t on the platform! However with so many users on Instagram it can be tough to break through the clutter and engage your target audience, especially once starting out. For some extra help Instagram analytics can be a great way to determine whether your content is working and helping you grow followers. It’s an easy way to see what types of content perform well and what types of content you should probably ditch. Instagram introduces Q&A to stories

At the beginning of last month Instagram have released a fun way to interact with your followers. The app introduced a new twist on their already existing polling feature with a Q&A feature. The new Q&A sticker allows your friends to submit questions for you to answer in your Insta story. Users can choose which questions they want on their story with the person who asked the question remaining anonymous. Here at m4m, we’ve had a lot of fun trying out this new feature and are happy to say it’s been a hit. Every Tuesday we let out followers ask one member of our team any question they like! It’s been a great way for our followers to interact and get to know us a bit better. With World Social Media day tomorrow what better way to celebrate than a recap of what’s been happening in the world of social media over the past month. From Instagram’s new video platform to the possibility of virtual reality coming to Facebook we discuss it all below!

Instagram goes head on with YouTube

You will soon be watching a lot more videos on Instagram with their new release of IGTV! You’ve probably already noticed the new TV shaped button in the top right hand corner of your feed that houses longer videos from people your following. Creators can upload up to an hour long video to the new IGTV hub. For now there are no advertisements, but don’t be surprised if you start seeing them in the future. Click here for more information on Instagram’s latest and greatest video platform and how you can take your video content to the next level!

Why you shouldn’t buy Instagram followers

Now we know it can be very tempting to buy followers for your business or personal page as we understand just how hard and frustrating it can be to grow your following. But don’t do it, you don’t buy friends…so don’t buy followers. It’s even more tempting when you see “buy 1000 Instagram followers for just $5,” however the risks far outweigh the rewards. While it may seem like a quick fix it might be doing more harm than good. Click here for 8 reasons why you shouldn’t buy your Instagram followers!

Facebook’s making it a lot easier for brands to find influencers

Facebook has big plans to increase connections with brands and creators for improved sponsored content by releasing a “brand collabs manager.” The new platform is essentially a search engine for brands to search influencers and celebrities that may fit well with their company. Creators will also be able to create their own portfolio on the platform highlighting how they can seamlessly work brands into their content. Another clever bow to their string for Facebooks ever expanding orchestra! For more information on how you can find your next influencer click here.

Snapchat adds ability to delete chat after being sent

Ever press send on a message that you instantly regret? Say goodbye to those embarrassing drunk messages to your ex and hello to your dignity because Snapchat has your back! The app has now added a new feature that allows you to delete sent messages from individual or group chats. You can still delete your message regardless if the other person has already seen it, however they will be notified when a message has been deleted. To find out how to delete your next drunk snap click here!

Virtual Reality coming to Facebook?!

Since launching 360 video in 2015 on Facebook we’ve seen many creators, publishers and advertisers use this immersive format in many creative ways. However Facebook is about to take it to the next level by introducing 3D-180 video. You may be thinking how on earth will I be able to see 3D posts in my timeline? Well you’re only going to get the full, immersive experience with a VR headset, which we would assume not many of you would have. However it is a huge development which makes us wonder where virtual reality will take us in the next few years. Click here to learn more about Facebook’s latest step towards virtual reality!

The Social Culture-Issue #12

With a whirlwind trip to NYC to attend Social Media Week it only seems fair that we share with you some of the things that we learnt and also what is about to pop into your news feeds. From a paid ad free Facebook option to an Instagram update that helps with our old FOMO addictions that haven’t gone away. We discuss the myths vs. realities for AI and what we need to be aware of moving forward.

Facebook is the new Tinder?

Facebook is taking on Tinder with a new dating feature on the app. According to Facebook, users will be able to set up a new dating profile that can be separate from your personal account, so you don’t have to worry about your friends seeing your dating profile! Your dating profile will only share your first name and you won’t be able to match with your existing Facebook friends. Facebook hasn’t released when this feature will be made available but will provide more information when they begin testing the service later on this year. Click here to learn more about how you could find your next relationship on Facebook!

Addicted to Instagram?? The app may soon tell you…

Since Instagram has scrapped the chronological feed in 2016 some Insta users have been left wondering if they’ve seen all posts from their followers or just the ones that have been ranked higher on their feeds. Now Instagram users can stop scrolling with FOMO as the latest update lets you know when you’re “all caught up” and have seen all new posts from the past 48 hours. Instagram may also start rolling out a usage insights tool which will let you know how much time you spend on the app in a particular time frame. We know what you’re thinking… total time spent on Instagram is a scary statistic to think about! However the apparent aim is to give users a way to help manage their time on the app to give them more control to make better decisions about their usage. For more info on Instagram’s latest update click here!

Would you pay for an ad-free Facebook?

An ad-free Facebook may be appearing in our future very shortly, however there is a catch… you have to pay for it. These rumours are nothing new, but with the recent backlash Facebook has received the past couple of months over their mishandling of user data perhaps these speculations should be taken seriously. Facebook has been conducting market research to determine whether an ad-free subscription would convince more people to sign up. If you don’t like the idea of paying for the social platform, no need to sweat, Zuckerberg has confirmed that there will always be a version of Facebook that will always be free!  Click here to learn more about the potential new version of Facebook.

Artificial Intelligence: Myth vs. Reality

Lately AI powered marketing has been the buzzword across the world among marketers. The power of AI allows marketers to sort through and analyse customer data, automate tasks and improve workflows. Despite the growing hype around AI not everyone is jumping on the bandwagon because of the many myths and concerns that surround it. Such as, will AI replace human jobs? What are the extra costs that AI will add to my business? Can AI make sense of any and all data? To find out the answers to these common misconceptions and questions about Artificial Intelligence click here.

Ready to make some noise? Snap introduces filters that react to sound!

Tired of sticking your tongue out to get the snapchat puppy filter to work? Now the app has added a new lens that responds to sound! Snapchat has now released a new animal filter that changes based on the sound in your environment. When the sound in the room gets louder the animal ears of the filter grows. The filter’s colour and sparkles also adjust with sound. Snapchat says that this filter is just one of many that is to come that responds to sounds. The Social Culture-Issue #11

When we sign up to online apps & social platforms we know that there could be the possibility of some kind of hacking. The online world isn’t 100% safe and it never will be, however, it is always really important to take certain measures to ensure that we are always protected. In the wake of the latest Facebook security breach, there really isn’t anything you could have done differently except NOT be on the social platform.

It’s time to clean up your data!

If you haven’t already heard Facebook is in BIG trouble. Just recently Facebook is facing a scandal over the use of it’s data by British political research company Cambridge Analytica. The research company that has been linked to Trump’s campaign used the personal information of 50 million people on Facebook, without authorization, to target them with personalised political advertisements. Now if you didn’t already know, when you download or sign in to a website using your Facebook log in, you are essentially giving those companies a look into your Facebook profile. If you’re beginning to feel a little nervous about your privacy on Facebook click here to find out how you can block these apps that are tracking you!

Snapchat takes ‘Chat’ to a new level

Snapchat is introducing several new features this week including the ability to make group video calls and tagging your friends in your snap stories. The new mention feature allows friends to shout each other out in their stories or to promote their favourite influencers, similar to Instagram’s feature. Tagging someone shows their username, bitmoji and a follow button to easily allow people to follow those that you’re shouting out. This feature will give Snap another way to expose users to other Snap content and could provide valuable in influencer marketing and brand promotion activities. The video chat feature, on the other hand, will allow up to 16 friends to conduct a video chat with each other. Click here to learn more about Snapchat’s latest features!

Instagram rolls out a new way to use hashtags

Your Instagram bio is extremely important, especially if you’re only using your Instagram account to promote your business. With only 150 words and only one link available, driving traffic elsewhere can be difficult. Luckily, Instagram has just made things a whole lot easier! The newest Instagram update allows you to turn profile usernames and hashtags within your bio into clickable hyperlinks. Adding branded hashtags or related hashtags to your interests makes your bio much more functional and engaging. You can also add any other profile into your bio meaning that visitors can click straight through onto the tagged account. Perfect for promoting your business Insta account on your personal one! Click here to learn how to use these new tagging features!

Is Facebook finally letting users dislike?

Well not quite..Recently some Facebook users have noticed that they are now able to downvote on comments that they don’t particularly like or agree with. A downvote or a dislike button has been the long awaited feature to appear on Facebook, but until now the social media site has only given positive reactions including the ‘love’ button. The new button, which says ‘downvote’ appears next to the ‘like’ and ‘reply’ buttons below a comment with its intended use of giving feedback to Facebook about uncivil or misleading comments. To learn more about Facebook’s potential new downvote button, click here.

3 examples of how influencers can hurt your brand

Now we’ve talked a lot about influencers on The Social Culture and how they can be very important for your brand but with that being said it’s important to find the right influencer that fits your brand. It’s also very important to craft smart and non-offensive campaigns with influencers that steer your brand clear of getting into big trouble. Click here to see three campaigns that went very wrong for both the brand and the influencer involved

Facebook challenges Linkedin

Not only can Facebook keep you in contact with friends from your past, but it could also help you find a job in the future. Just last month Facebook became Linkedin’s newest competitor as the social media giant introduced job postings to it’s lists of services. Facebook now allows businesses to create job posts, manage applications and schedule interviews, entirely on mobile. This feature is currently only available to businesses in US and Canada, however a global rollout is expected if the new feature proves successful. Click here to learn more about Facebook’s new job offerings.

The Social Culture-Issue #10

When it comes to social media there are so many things that get thrown around with regards to what is the most important to know, follow or post. In the made4media office we sat down and had a chat about what we think are the top 3 most important things that you should know to create the best social media opportunities for your business.

What you should know…

#1-Social media isn’t a walk in the park, it’s a hike up Kilimanjaro!

Social media is about a strategy, you can’t just do it without a plan and then expect to have the followers, gain traction, sell more product, generate leads, etc. Nothing happens without a plan in social media. It takes time and a strategy, and strategy isn’t always easy. You don’t build a house without a plan, you can’t build your social media presence without a strategy.

#2- Social marketing is visual

Don’t just write a sentence and post it, that’s boring! No one is going to read it without a video or a picture. Video content is easy to do with so many apps and programs to help you out these days. Same with photos, where ever you are take a photo of something interests you on your phone, you never know when that picture could be used later down the track to help with a social post.

#3-Keep ego in mind when creating content
